Story Corner
A Date with the Colonel

submitted by Pat Horner
July 19, 2006 saw the Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connection Coffee group helping the new management at the Colonel Clarke’s Country Inn establish their kitchen and clientele. The troops mustered at the Seniors Connect Office and joined cars headed north from town. I happened to notice some pedestrians stopped reverently on the sidewalk and one elderly gentleman even took his hat off (shades of the 1940’s) as we sailed by. They soon changed their minds when they realized it was not a funeral cortege – only elderly - young passengers laughing and waving on their way to a lunch out!
One driver thought she would give everyone a thrill by coasting through the forty hills – but passengers complained that it was toooo slow a drive for the “thrills”. They were also disappointed that we did not meet a double-decker bus as they wanted the experience of “backing down”, anyway, all admitted the route through the bush was lovely and we had to admire the buffalo on emerging, though they told us to mind our own business.
The road west took us to the Inn and we were greeted and seated at nicely set tables. There were 20 of us and a few members of the public at the other tables and a rival group from the seniors apartments who hoped we were not going to make a lot of noise (ROWDIES). All these patrons were tastefully served by two very pleasant and capable ladies working on staff. Our specially prepaid menu sheet (thanks Martin!) gave us a choice of three dishes on one side and on the other a very interesting history of Colonel Clarke’s. I think our own Lee Knight had provided a lot of that information from her knowledge and experience.
The dining pleasure was heightened by the owner, Joe, who gently played his accordion while we dined. A certain dashing and quite light on their feet couple couldn't resist getting on their feet and dancing – I might add quite fantastic – though I am not sure really about the light! They did not wish to remain anonymous for this report but the writer insists on it as there was a rumour and suspicion that they were just showing off! The pics tell it all!
When the lunch, dancing, chatting, and laughter was over we all dispersed to our various ways feeling full, happy and grateful for the life of freedom and plenty which we have – and the beauty of the Bruce.
Special thanks to Val and Kristyne and Martin for arranging such a lovely time – you notice the word lovely contains “LOVE” – that’s what we are all about. Also a special thanks to Monika and Joe for their wonderful hosting of our group at the new Colonel Clarke’s Country Inn.

The Bitter Truth
Studies show that our taste buds change with age – including a decline of sensitivity to bitterness. Fortunately, this makes many healthy foods more appealing to us as we get older. Research indicates that older women have an increased tolerance for green vegetables, whole-grain foods, and bitter fruits such as grapefruits and lemons. And you thought Grandma’s puckered face came from misplaced dentures!

The South West Local Health Integration Network is one of 14 LHINs that have been established across Ontario as part of an overall strategy to transform health care. LHINs are responsible for health care planning, funding, allocation and performance reporting in their geographic regions, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that all Ontarians have access to high quality preventive care, treatment and support.
The South West LHIN is committed to engaging local residents in an ongoing dialogue about local health care needs and solutions. Our first task is to create a strategic plan for our LHIN that identifies our local challenges and priorities for change. We need your help to get it right.
To help us with the development of our plan, we have scheduled a number of forums across the South West to meet with community members and hear first hand about the health care system you want and need.
Public forums will be held on Tuesday, 12 September at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Owen Sound at 7 p.m. and on Tuesday, 19 September at The Meeting Place in Wiarton at 7 p.m.
To register for either of these Community Forums, please call Debbie at this toll-free number – 1-866-294-5446.

NEITHER RAIN, NOR SLEET, NOR SNOW CAN STOP THE...

Well, our Seniors Zone 32 Club can do them one better. Over 250 hardy seniors converged on Stokes Bay on Wednesday morning, July 26, for a picnic.
Yes!!! We had rain, a little bit, we had downpours, thunder, lightening. The edges of the large tent would suddenly let down a real flood now and then. Regardless, we had a wonderful time. Marlene, our Mistress of Ceremony, did an excellent job of keeping everything moving. Our entertainment was great music, skits, fashion show, harmonica solo, spoon solo and duet, and stories. Of course, the main part of any picnic is the food and Bob Zavitz and his helpers came through as always. The great lunch was topped off with ice cream on a stick.
All in all it was a great day. Thank you to one and all and to mother nature – it could have been worse. You missed a good time.
