Fun at Fellthwaite
by Pat Horner

On Wednesday, September 13th 2006, seniors who enjoy the weekly drop-in coffee
mornings were invited to a litle more than coffee at a lunchtime gathering ay my cliff-top home
Fellthwaite. Its a north of England word (Cumbria) meaning fell, the side of a hill and thaite, a
clearing surrounded by trees. It is a 100' x 200' property on a cliff over looking Isthmus Bay and
the Lions Head harbour, which I purchased in 1956 when the cliff was less populated than it is
now, and small summer cottages wee popular. A 15' x 25' cabin was erected and for 30 years gave
me unlimited pleasure when I escaped from many nursing duties in different parts of the country.
Many friend also enjoyed this retreat, especially my parents who would come over frequently for
summers after my dad retired from teaching in England. No one seemed to mind the the hungry
old wood stove, taps with cold water only, and a very stately outhouse. My dad used the
outhouse as a toolshed also, and the neighbours used to think he had problems as he would be
seen making frequent trips to this important building.
In the course of time my parents died, I married and my husband and I retired from our
work in the Northwest Territories. In 1983, George built onto the cottage and we enjoyed a
cocktail party at 11 a.m. one morning when the new bathroom was completed and we could
actually flush our own toilet! In 1990 the dear old cottage was removed and our new winterized
home completed. Sadly George died in 1992, leaving me with a lovely comfortable home which
he had mainly built. When I cant fix something I say Where are you now George, when I need
you You know, I can almost hear him answer me in the joking way he often used!
We need to get back to our Seniors Connect Luncheon! What a jolly time we had with 18
folks gathered in my dining room as a rainy day prevented us from using the deck as we did last
year. Nevertheless, all enjoyed the view from the large window overlooking the bay.
Kristyne had kindly made up delicious sandwiches and I provided tea & coffee and a
modified formof English Trifle. Lots of good and funny conversations ensued and the party was
enhanced by the presence of my English friend Marion, over for a vacation. We had first met in
1949 when we entered nursing training together and we are still only 39 years old! Also
greeting everybody was my 13 year old cat Tito who is really the boss in my house. It was a
lovely gathering of good friends and we sure do enjoy each others company especially the
reminiscences of three who are over 90. We pray Gods blessing for Eleanor and George who will
be leaving for their family in New Brunswick at the end of September.
Let us sally forth through the beauty of autumn, the quietness (perhaps) of winter,
honouring each day we spend in this beautiful Bruce.

What is a Grandparent?
(taken from papers written by a class of 8-year-olds)
Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of her own. They like other peoples.
A grandfather is a man grandmother.
Grandparents don't have to do anything except be there when we come to see them. They are so old they shouldnt play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the store and have lots of quarters for us.
When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars.
They show us and talk to us about the color of the flowers and also why we shouldn't step on cracks.
They dont say, Hurry up.
Usually grandmothers are fat, but not too fat to tie your shoes.
They wear glasses and funny underwear.
They can take their teeth and gums out.
Grandparents dont have to be smart.
They have to answer questions like Why isnt God married? and How come dogs chase cats?
When they read to us, they don't skip. They dont mind if we ask for the same story over again.
Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you dont have television, because they are the only grownups who like to spend time with us.
They know we should have snack-time before bedtime and they say prayers with us every time, and they kiss us even when weve acted bad.
A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. Oh, he said, she lives at the airport, and when we want her we just go get her. Then when were done having her visit, we take her back to the airport.

LHIN Forum
Local Health Integration Network held an information session on 19 September at the Meeting Place in Wiarton, with approximately 60 people in attendance. This forum was well presented, issues and concerns were addressed through a working session of groups giving input and suggestions and concerns regarding accountability and the dispersing of funds meaning who really will decide where the 1.5 million dollars will go and who will be considered a priority.
LHIN will be holding approximately 65 forums in the southwest area which I might add, is quite vast geographically. It was presented that Upper Bruce Peninsula expressed the Advisory Group definitely should and must hold another forum as the one that was held was not advertised so area people could attend and address issues and concerns, also to have a better understanding of what this Group is about!!!
To participate in the Community Engagement Process, you can visit their web site at http://www.southwestlhin.ca or give us a call here and we can send out information booklets.
The next forum will be held 26 September in Southampton.

Dear Annie: Some time ago, you printed a piece that, in essence, was bout a woman regaining her self-worth after a failed relationship. I had recently divorced and it helped me so much. I now have a co-worker in the same situation and I would like to share it with her, but I cannot find my copy. Could you please help? J
Dear J.: Here it is, one our readers most requested pieces: After a While by Veronica A. Shoffstall
After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesnt mean leaning
and company doesnt always mean security.
And you begin to learn
that kisses arent contracts
and presents arent promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrows ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn...
