A Slithery Tale
The rosy glow of evening was fading and its warm colour
replaced with grey shadows and nippy breezes – the autumn’s
closure of summer scenes. The one room cabin – called a
cottage by its owner – felt cool to Helen, the city dweller, not
familiar with out way of life on the Bruce.
Helen had already established her difficulty adjusting to “life
in the sticks” and positive fear and loathing of all things
resembling insect life. She was contented by reading in the best,
and only, armchair whilst I started to activate my very old and
accident-prone wood stove.
After fiddling in the wood box for what seemed a long time,
Helen asked me why I was taking so long and why I thought I
could retrieve my wood with a long pair of tongs and a shovel.
I replied, “I had hoped to solve my dilemma without attracting
attention but obviously I can’t. I don’t know how to tell you
this – but I have a snake in this wood box uninvited. Are you
going to panic?”
Without looking up from her book, Helen said, “I don’t
know or care how you do it but I will not move until you get
rid of it – and the panic attack may come before you do.” She
literally looked paralysed. The more I delved into the box the
more the creature disappeared to the bottom. With great effort
and much colourful language I dragged the box outside and lay
it on its side. I did not wait to see by flashlight if the elegant
squirmer escaped into the un-manicured lawn of wiry weeds.
I retuned to the cabin and to my still motionless friend who
asked “has it gone?” I replied that I only knew that it was
outdoors and should be gone by morning. Sad to say, she did
not step outdoors all the next day and never came again for a
wonderful weekend at the cottage.

A Bench In The Sun is the story of Harold & Burt, long-time
friends, living in a retirement home and spending their days on a
bench in a garden, bickering. A once famous actress moves in,
giving the two love-struck senior citizens something new to argue
over. When plans are made to sell the retirement home, the new
trio of friends plots to save their home.
“…very wise, very moving, but most of all very, funny.”
