A Wonderful Day in the Country!
June 1st saw 23 Tobermory folk head out under a severe thunderstorm warning for our day in the sun. And the sun was waiting for us at Larkwhistle! We had a delightful tour with John & Patrick, and took full advantage of their knowledge and advice about our various gardening interests. A few gems from their garden accompanied some of us home to our own gardens, always a welcome treat.
Our various carloads wended their way to Cape Chin for lunch, via Ben’s Pottery, Mountain Trout Camp, and a few back roads. Lunch as always was marvellous, and the chance to share some fellowship and be given the usual meticulous attention by Anne and her staff was delightful.
We headed home by various routes, including St. Margaret’s Chapel and the buffalo compound, only to find we had been preceded by a violent thunderstorm in Tobermory, and torrential rains on Hwy.#6. Somehow, we managed to avoid most of that- a real blessing!
Looking forward to our next excursion, and open to suggestions.

Lion's Head Coffee Connection Goes to Lunch

May 30th was a beautiful, sunny day when we drove to Tobermory and had lunch at the Princess
Hotel.
We then made our way to the Information Centre where we viewed a 10 minute video about the
Bruce, which was very informative. We walked around and viewed the interesting exhibits. A good time was
had by all!

The Flycycle Project

The "Propcycle", a device used to test the performance of the constructed propellers.
You have all probably heard a little about the fascinating experimental plane being built at Tobermory
airport. On June 14th, we were enlightened by an excellent presentation from the whole Flycycle crew.
Richard Synergy, the conceptual designer and organiser, brought his student interns and a thumbnail view
of the technical and practical aspects of bringing their intended record-setting human-powered flight to
fruition. Bart and Lillian, fifth year aerospace engineering students from The Netherlands, Mike, a
bio-mechanical engineering student from U.Ohio, and Max, a high school student and successful
human-powered hovercraft inventor & builder from Tallahassee, all enlightened us about their contributions
to the project. It was great to meet and appreciate these bright young folk living among us, and Max’s piano
stylings were particularly appreciated! The team welcomes your further interest and support. Perhaps we
will all be there when they take flight!

Q: True or False? It's unsafe to heat plastic containers in the microwave.
False – as long as they are labelled “microwave safe”. There was a widely circulated email warning
about the dangers of microwaving food in plastic containers or plastic wrap. The message warned that can leach
chemicals out of the plastic and into the food, especially foods with a high fat content like cheese and meats, causing
cancer and reproductive problems.
There is some evidence to suggest that certain plasticizers (additives used to make plastic flexible) called
phthalates, can leach out and cause cancer and reproductive problems in animals. But the effect isn't clear in humans.
Phthalates are commonly found in soft plastics, like the kind meat is wrapped in, and in take out containers.
To ensure safe use of plastic containers or wrap in the microwave:
- Do not use plastic containers or wrap unless they are labelled “microwave safe”. Packaged foods with instructions
for microwave heating in the container and storage containers sold for use in microwave ovens are two examples of
safe containers. Plastic containers like margarine tubs, yogurt containers, take out containers, whipped topping bowls,
and other one-time use containers are not considered safe.
- Do not let plastic wraps touch the food when heating. Leave one inch between the food and plastic wrap when
heating in the microwave. Do not use thin plastic storage bags, plastic grocery bags or aluminum foil in the
microwave.
- Remove food from the store wrap before thawing or reheating in the microwave, unless the manufacturer has
indicated that it's meant for microwave use.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it.
For example I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt...
