Be Prepared... Not Scared!
Tobermory Seniors Connect enjoyed a very informative and practical presentation from our
municipal fire chief, Mike Henderson, at our November coffee break. He offered ideas on how to prepare
ourselves to contend with winter driving emergencies, and for difficult circumstances in our homes
during storms, power failures, etc. Some very useful brochures were made available to us, and there are
extra copies at the Seniors Connect office, or from the municipal office. These include a 911 pamphlet
that guides you through finding the right help for various situations, and provides a record of your medical
information for emergency services to refer to if you can’t speak for yourself. A Red Cross pamphlet
“Be Prepared, Not Scared”, provides lots of helps to set yourself up to safely weather the unexpected.
We also were given some very good information about emergency services here on the Bruce,
and it is comforting to know our municipality is moving forward on a number of improvements to our safety.
North Bruce does have an emergency plan, and it is reworked and improved upon annually. The current
major project is the installation of large generators at both community centres and fire halls, so that there
is somewhere to bring folk into the warmth and be able to feed and care for them in an emergency. We
even have cots available for an evacuation to safety. Our services are working on a way to identify at risk
folk, so that emergency service workers would know which houses have someone who may need extra
support in them. And if information needs to be put out to area residents, notice will immediately be
broadcast on station CFOS in Owen Sound, found at 560 AM.
There is also a separate communications system for our volunteer firemen. In case of not being able
to get help by telephone, our neighbourhood firemen can connect us to whatever help we need.
If you follow the suggestions in the pamphlets, you can count on our emergency services to do
the rest!
Now don’t you feel better knowing that? Have a safe and comfortable Peninsula winter!

The Finer things in life...
Seniors Connect Tobermory enjoyed a great day in Owen Sound on Sunday, November 18th.
Ten of us car-pooled to town in bright sunshine, exploring a little on the way, and gathered for great
food and companionship at Montana’s. The performance of Anne of Green Gables, which followed at the
Roxy, was wonderful. Thirty talented members of Owen Sound Little Theatre gave it their all, and brought
us to cheers and tears. We headed for home at dusk, touring the amazing display of the Northern Lights
Festival along the river en route. A good day was had by all!
