Tobermory Exercise Program
Seniors Connect is working to ensure that the residents in Tobermory and area are
physically fit. An Exercise Program has been started at the Tobermory Legion on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. We have been very pleased with the response. Initially, the Program
was planned for Tuesday only, but there has been sufficient interest to have it on Thursday as well. There
have been approximately 20 people attending on Tuesday, and at least 6 or 8 coming in on Thursday.
Participants come from Gillies Lake, Dyers Bay, Johnson Harbour, Dorcas Bay, Tobermory and all areas in
between.
An Indoor Walking Group meets every Wednesday morning at the Tobermory Community Center.
This is a great way to keep in shape without having to brave the elements, especially with the weather we
have had recently. We are always looking for more participants, so come out and join the group.
Kathy Anderson is leading a “Gentle Exercise Program” at the Brad Davis Apartments in Tobermory,
every Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. This program is an excellent opportunity for seniors who want to
participate in low impact exercise, and is open to all seniors in the area.

Safety Tip of the Month
Never let your gas tank get below the ½ full mark.
Really good advice especially for North Bruce folk.
It can easily be 100 km to an all-night gas station if you
have to head out in an emergency, and you can get cold
awfully quickly if you run out of gas!

Alzheimer Forget-Me-Not Tree Report
During the month of December in Lion’s Head a group of dedicated volunteers helped to raise
$1299.40 for the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce. This campaign was held in Scott’s Pro
Hardware, Hellyer’s Foodland and the LCBO. In addition a selective canvass was held.
These funds would not have been raised without the assistance of over thirty helpers who sat
in the drafts as doors opened, sat in cramped quarters to write a receipt and generally did not
have the greatest of working conditions but prevailed.
This year our plan was to raise a live Spruce Tree of some 18 feet in height on the grounds
of the Royal Bank. We had this all set up, a tree donated and were ready to go. The phone
rings it is a contractor telling me that he is going to be digging up the area where our crew
was going to decorate the tree. The tile bed under the grass is plugged and needs to be
replaced now. Quickly we developed plan B. This was to put the tree on the Cenotaph site
a little further west on Main Street.
John McCurdy brought up his Hydro line truck to help Martin Hogarth and the writer to put
up the tree and decorate it. The first day that we had the work scheduled, the winds arrived
about a half an hour prior to lift off. Delay until day 2. Day 2 arrived, and so did the snow.
Just as we were about to commence the decorating the tree, we had the snow of late
November. We were able to overcome Mother Nature, got the tree up and decorated. A thing
of beauty is a Christmas tree with all blue lights on a Snowy Winter Night. Thanks to the
next door neighbour, we had found a source of power for our lights at the Cat’s Pajamas
B&B. Our joy of accomplishment was to be short lived. That evening, my eldest Grandson
and the writer attended to the comforts of the tree. Reinforced by heavy construction planks
and spikes the tree was braced against all the travails of nature or so we thought. This was
on Wednesday. Friday morning our tree was resting on the snow on the ground. Martin
Luther King’s words echoed in my head, and with the help of the crew from the Hydro, the
tree was again standing as a proud sentinels guarding the entrance of the Cenotaph. This
time, there were ropes, tied to trees, rebar driven into the ground with wires to the tree, all
in hopes of securing our tree throughout the Christmas Season. That evening, a gremlin or
two, other than Mother Nature, paid us a visit. This time the tree appeared to have been
pushed to the west rather than being blown to the east. That was the last straw for your
faithful workers. It was decided that we would have to conduct the campaign without a tree
for 2007.
2008 should be different, Laurie- Anne Shearer of Canada Post has agreed to let the group
plant a live tree on the grounds of the Post Office to the south of the Community Sign board.
Jerry Caudle will donate another tree for us to plant. Hopefully then in 2008 we will be able
to point to our tree with pride and say, here is the Alzheimer Forget Me Not Tree for Lion’s
Head. To all the men and women who helped us write receipts in the stores we appreciate.
To the bank who was willing to allow us their land for the tree until a tile bed malfunction,
thanks. John, Martin, Captain Jerry, the crew from Hydro One, Ron and his wife from Cat’s
Pajamas B & B the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce is most grateful for your kind efforts on behalf of the Forget Me Not Tree. Each time the funds are turned into the office from
Lion’s Head, the folks in the office marvel at the generosity of the people from our
community. 2007 funds were down from the record that was raised in 2005 of some
$1700.00. However, per capita, we have one of the greatest donations in the two counties.
Thank you Bruce Peninsula, you came through once again.
