Wiarton Area Seniors Connect Founding Meeting
A meeting was held April 15th, 2008, at St. John’s United Church, Wiarton, at the invitation of the
Wiarton Interchurch Group, 26 members of the Wiarton community from a variety of backgrounds
gathered with Seniors Connect representatives to discuss services and activities available for seniors
in the Wiarton area. Each participant was asked to identify himself or herself, their affiliation and interest
in the needs of our seniors. What they had to offer was either information about existing programs, or what
is missing and needed in the community. It quickly became evident a lot already exists to improve seniors’
quality of life in this area, but there is a need for better communication between groups to get that
information out.
The most frequently mentioned need was for a drop-in centre for seniors to socialise, play cards, etc.
Several suitable, easily accessible locations were offered. As a first step, it was decided that there will be a
drop-in initiated at St. John’s United Church every Wednesday morning from 10:00 – 12:00 a.m., and Marsha
Fishleigh and Judy Halliday have offered to begin that soon. Support will be needed in the form of extra
volunteers, and perhaps some speakers or games organisers, and other entertainment.
Second in priority was Internet training – will that soon follow? We hope so!
Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect is coming to life in Wiarton!

Tobermory Exercise Programs Put On Hold Until Fall
We had a very successful Exercise Program at the Legion Hall in Tobermory, with an average of 12
people attending on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We plan to start the program again in the fall after
Thanksgiving. Naomi McFarlane will continue as the Instructor.
Now that spring has arrived, the Indoor Walking Group will be able to do their walking outdoors.
However, we hope to be able to use the Community Centre again next winter. The Municipality would like
us to notify them of our plans in the fall and they will schedule it on the calendar.
Kathy Anderson has also completed the Balance and Stretching Exercises at Brad Davis Apartments.
We will try to have this program again in the fall and hope to attract more participants.

Model Builders

Clive Morgan's 1" scale steam engine.
The Model Builders Group has been meeting on a monthly basis since last September.
There are presently 6 members supplemented by 4 seasonal residents. The main themes to date
have revolved around trains and ships but anything miniature is possible.
Our meetings in the past have included:
- a visit to a garden railway and miniature train rides in Lion’s Head,
- a detailed tour of the National Park Visitors Centre in Tobermory,
- viewed in Lion's Head miniature hand built tug boats,
- observed a computer controlled laser cutter that is used to make model kits – awesome,
- watched HO trains run on the Grey Central Railway in Holland Centre.
Coming up on April 26 is a trip to the Great British Train Show in Brampton.
Plans for the May 2008 get together have not yet been finalized but if you are in terested in
joining our group please call me at 519-793-4586.
