Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect
Board Meeting

The Board Meeting will be at 2:00 p.m.,
Wednesday, November 19, at 90 Main Street, Lion’s Head.

ALL WELCOME

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

“LEST WE FORGET”

Seniors Connect Fall Luncheon
& Parks Canada Visit

On Wednesday, September 24th, Seniors Connect began our Tobermory fall season with a bang. We were privileged to have Sean Liipere guide us through the visitors’ centre and museum, with lots of opportunity for questions and insights into our natural history and surroun- dings on the Bruce Peninsula. We were also fortunate to be able to participate in the release of one of 50 or so Monarch butterflies raised by hand this summer, and sent on their long journey south. We were amazed to learn that the last hatch of the season is programmed to survive for months rather than a couple of short weeks, in order to travel to warmer climes and begin a new generation there. One of our local releases from last summer was identified in Mexico months later.
After our morning at the Park, we gathered at Tobermory Legion for a great fall luncheon, and some social time. A Silent Auction event gave us some treasures to bid on – a little early Christmas shopping?
After lunch, we were treated to skilled musicians The Harbour Rats, in the persons of Hugh Stevenson and Dave Williams. Their music ranged from rollicking to inspirational, and delighted us all. We had the added pleasure of some humour from Dave, gaining him roars of laughter and groans, and some new fans for both of these talented local guys.
Seniors Connect thanks Parks Canada and Sean Liipere, Tobermory Legion, and Hugh and David for their kindness in making this day memorable for all.

Computers for Seniors

Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect has applied for a New Horizons Grant, which if approved, will provide Computer Training and a free Computer for seniors who meet the criteria set out by this program. The reconditioned computers are supplied by Industry Canada. If the grant is approved, Seniors Connect will be notified by October 31, 2008, and a training sessions will be set up as quickly as possible after that date.
The program is available to seniors who have expressed an interest in having computer, but who may not have the resources to purchase one, and will be especially beneficial to seniors who are living alone. It will allow them to communicate with family and friends in other parts of the country, thereby helping to relieve loneliness and isolation.
At the present time, Seniors Connect is compiling a list of seniors who are interested in participating in the program. They are asking all Clubs and Organizations on the Bruce Peninsula to submit names of seniors in the area who may be interested in taking part in the program.
Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect is also looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping with this endeavour.
If you know of anyone who might benefit from this program, please contact: Shirley Johnstone at 519-795-7424.
