SAFELY HOME

Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect hosted a very interesting and informative presentation on October 22, 2008 at the Seniors Connect Office with 22 people attending.
Glenda Clarke of the Alzheimer Society outlined the symptoms of Alzheimer disease, and the importance of finding out the cause of the symptoms, getting the proper care and planning for the future.
People with Alzheimer sometimes lose the ability to recognize familiar places, to communicate or to remember their own name and address. They may leave home, become confused and get lost. This can be dangerous for people with the disease and worrisome for caregivers. However, there is help – a program called Safely Home.
“Safely Home” is a nationwide program designed to help to find the person who is lost and to assist in a safe return home. Developed by the Alzheimer Society in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a registry stores vital information confidentially on a police database. The information can be accessed by police anywhere in Canada and the United States.

How does Safely Home work?
When the registrant goes missing, the caregiver calls the local police. Accessing the computer database, the police will find pertinent information about the registrant including personal history, physical characteristics and locations where the person is known to visit. It is important for caregivers to keep an up-to-date photo of the registrant on hand. When the registrant is found, the police use the identification number for the person’s ID bracelet to search the computer database. They determine where the person lives and who to contact, and ensure that the person is returned Safely Home.

How do I register?
Registration is voluntary. Simply contact the Alzheimer Society. For a one-time fee of $35.00, the registrant will receive an Identification bracelet and identification cards. Wearing the bracelet and keeping the cards in places such as wallets and coat pockets aid in quickly identifying people should they become lost. The Alzheimer Society will update the registrant’s file annually. The front of the bracelet reads:

Urgent – See Other Side

The back of the bracelet shows the ID number and the person’s first name and reads:

Memory Loss – Call Police

INDOOR WALKING GROUP

Thanks to The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, the Tobermory Community Center is available for the Indoor Walking Group each morning from Monday to Friday. Several people have taken advantage of this opportunity, and now that winter is approaching, I’m sure more people will be coming out. Norm Stevens has some good lively music to get everyone going, so come out and bring a friend.

LINE DANCING

Several people have inquired about having Line Dancing in Tobermory. We hope to have a program set up in the New Year. If you are interested please call: Shirley Johnstone at 519-795-7424.

COMPUTERS FOR SENIORS

Further to our application for Computers for Seniors, we have been informed that the decision regarding our funding application will hopefully be made by mid December.
In the meantime, we are gathering names of seniors who are interested in taking part in the program if our Grant is approved. We are also looking for volunteers who would be willing to help with the program. If you know of anyone that is interested in the program or willing to help out as a volunteer, please call Shirley Johnstone, President, at 519-795-7424.

The Computer Swallowed Grandma

The computer’s swallowed grandma
Yes, honestly, its true.
She pressed ‘control’ and ‘enter’
And disappeared from view.

Its devoured her completely
The thought just makes me squirm.
Maybe she’s caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.

I’ve searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind.
I’ve even used the Internet
But nothing did I find.

In desperation I asked Jeeves
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative
Not a thing was found ‘online’.

So, if inside your ‘In Box’
My Grandma you should see.
Please ‘Scan’, ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ her
In an e-mail back to me.

An Ode to Seniors

What are seniors worth anyway?

We are worth a fortune!

Remember, old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet, and gas in their stomachs. We have become a little older since I saw you last, and a few changes have come into my life since then. Frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal.

I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed, then I go to see John, then Charlie Horse comes along, and when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day I’m really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life! Oh yes, I’m also flirting with Al Zymer.

P.S.
The preacher came to call the other day, he said at my age I should be thinking about the hereafter. I told him, “Oh I do all the time.” No matter where I am, in the parlour, upstairs, in the kitchen or down in the basement,
I now ask myself... “What am I here after?”
