Flora and the Red Van
Flora, a friend of mine, came up from the city for a week’s visit
on the Bruce. Having explored the bays and back roads it was
decided to spend the summer afternoon in the village where Flora
wanted to buy some souvenirs. In order to accomplish our differing
chores it was agreed to pursue them independently and return to the
red van as it wasn’t the custom in the village to lock, though it was
anywhere outside it.
Flora was finished first so made herself comfortable in the van
and decided it was a good idea to use the time with a manicure of
her carefully tended fingernails. It wasn’t long before a gentleman
stopped by the open window, smiled and remarked on the lovely
day. Flora smiled back in agreement, thinking how nice were the
village ways, always willing to speak to strangers. Filing on the nails
continued and in a few minutes the gentleman appeared again with
a lady at his side. This time he asked if she was on holiday and
enjoying herself. Flora decided that as he was holding the hand of
the lady, he mustn’t have ideas of flirting so she explained where
she was from and how much she loved the Bruce Peninsula.
He replied, “I’m so glad to hear it – and you obviously are quite
comfortable sitting in my van.”
When Flora realized that two red vans were parked together she
put away her manicure set, smiled at the man and woman and
changed her seat to the van next door with a face redder than the
two vehicles together!
This is a true story.

Computers for Seniors
Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect has had
several inquiries about this program. We have been
assured by Regional office that the program is still
ongoing. However, due to the fact that Parliament
has not been in session for six weeks, this has
caused a major delay. All applications must be
approved by the Minister. Now that Parliament is in
session, we hope approval will be forthcoming in the
near future.

The Commercialization of Valentines
Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
An alternative theory from Belarus states that the holiday originates from the story of Saint Valentine, who upon rejection by his mistress was so heartbroken that he took a knife to his chest and sent her his still-beating heart as a token of his undying love for her. Hence, heart-shaped cards are now sent as a tribute to his overwhelming passion and suffering.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines.” Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was
a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th-century America was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.
The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Who was Saint Valentine?
Every February 14, for about 1700 years, people have remembered St. Valentine, a man who died because he was in love.
He discovered a unique type of love. A love so exciting, so powerful, so over-whelming as to make the romance of Romeo and Juliet look like puppy love, and the affairs of Josephine and Napoleon, Anthony and Cleopatra, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor look second rate.
From the moment he became a Christian until he was murdered, the threat of death and terrifying torture dangled over his neck every day. But nothing could stop him. He was in love. With innocent Christians suffering unspeakable horrors, dying like flies around him, he was unfazed by the question as to why a God of love would allow such things. He knew a secret.
In the times in which he lived, multiplied thousands were tortured to death. Rather than compromise, they chose to endure indescribable agonies, because each of them was in love – with the same person. God.
