Computer Courses

Seniors Connect has had a number of request for further Computer Training Courses. While there are several people who would like to have the Basic Course, many of the people who took the Basic Course last year, are now ready for more Advanced Training. Last year, the Computer Training was made possible through Government Funding. That funding has been depleted and in order for the Computer Training to continue, it will be necessary for some costs to be incurred by the participants involved. The Board of Seniors Connect will be discussing this issue over the summer and are hoping to have plans finalized to begin offering classes in the Fall.

ATTENTION

Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect

ANNUAL MEETING

Wednesday, September 15th 2010
2:00 p.m.

Seniors Connect Office
ALL WELCOME

Volunteers

Over the last few months, Seniors Connect has had a number of requests for Volunteer Drivers to take Seniors to Medical appointments, Grocery shopping etc.
If you are interested in being a Volunteer Driver, please contact: Shirley Johnstone at 519-795-7424 or e-mail shirley.jpj@hotmail.com for more information.

Bingo

This has become a popular event with an average of 10 – 15 seniors coming out to the Seniors Connect office each week. Each participant brings a wrapped item for a prize and they are getting quite creative in the prizes they bring, i.e. Chocolate bars, popcorn, dishcloths, facecloths, soap, bath salts, even Tupperware. The prizes are always a surprise and provide a few laughs. The seniors truly enjoy these little outings where they can spend a few hours with friends, play a few games of Bingo and maybe even win a prize.

E-mail Addresses

We need your e-mail addresses. If you have e-mail, please send us your e-mail address. We are trying to cut down on the cost of mailing the Newsletter.

WE INVITE YOUR IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS

Coffee Connection

Seniors Connect Coffee Mornings are held every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. It can be “come and go” such as library attendees dropping in for a coffee – or tea – or just a chat. We aim for informality though sometimes we have a speaker to give useful information and sometimes enjoy a presentation of picture slides or a video documentary. We have even been known to go out for lunch afterwards.
The last few years have shown a fairly steady attendance of 12–15, which gives rise to many interesting conversations and shared information. I must admit the women outnumber the men but the latter often offer wonderful stories (true or otherwise) which adds laughter and much joy to our meetings. Recently we all celebrated Margaret’s 90th birthday with song, story, cards and cake with candles. Now, although most of us are over 39, we are young in heart – and ideas. Many Seniors, like myself, love the music of the 50’s & 60’s and so look forward to the annual visit of the “Big Bands” to Port Elgin. This year it is on September 18. Many not only go to listen, but to also dance the light fantastic (not do sure about the light!) Do you remember the Fox Trot; Quick Step; Waltz; Rhumba – and even the Jitter-Bug? Those were the days of real music and real dancing. Even the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance” is not dancing – it is amazing acrobatics. No wonder my granddaughter says “You are more than 39, grandma!”
Please remember that we are not ‘a club’ – but an informal gathering of friends who would welcome you any Wednesday.
